Snow and ice can make hydrants difficult to locate and use when seconds matter. Residents are encouraged to "adopt' a fire hydrant near their home by clearing snow and ice at least three feet around the hydrant and creating a clear path to the street after snowfalls. No registration is required —just a shovel and a few extra minutes. Thank you for helping support first responders and keep Lake Elmo safe this winter. January 15 is National Pothole Day! Washington County Guided Bird Hikes Begin Saturday, GUIDES January 10 BIRD Washington County's series of guided bird HIKES hikes throughout county parks will continue • throughout 2026, with the year's first wintertime hike happening 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 10, at Lake Elmo Park Reserve's Nordic Center. The guided bird hike program is free with a Parks vehicle permit ($7/daily or $30/annually) and is open to people of all ages and abilities. ADA accommodations are available upon request. Washington Conservation District Annual Tree Sale Now Open The Washington Conservation District's annual tree sale is underway, offering a wide selection of affordable trees and shrubs to help residents enhance their landscapes, improve water quality, and support local wildlife. Tree selection is similar to last year but some species from previous years have been added, as well as more native plant trays and seed mixes. Also added is another packet, the Climate Ready Packet, which includes Allegheny Serviceberry, Hackberry, Sugar Maple, Swamp White Oak, and Black Hills Spruce. A Ordering will be open through April 2026 until the pickup date or until supplies last. Pickup times are 9am-5pm Friday, April 24th and 9am-12pm, April 25th at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Note that we will only be accepting online orders again this year. Proceeds support local conservation and education efforts throughout Washington County. Toddler Tuesday is Back Tuesday, January 13, at Sally Manzara The Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center's first Toddler Tuesday of the new year will be on Tuesday, January 13, at 10 a.m. We will be learning about what animals do in wintertime. Do you think animals have fun in the winter? This session we will be spending some time outside sledding like river otters (bring your sled and dress for outside!) and playing tag like coyotes! Afterwards we will warm up with cocoa and marshmallows! $8.00 for children 1-5 years old. Adults & children younger than 1 are free.
