City Business Resilient Grass Research Takes Root in Lake Elmo Did you know Lake Elmo is helping researchers learn which grasses may be better suited for Minnesota's changing conditions? The University of Minnesota is testing 30 different grass seed combinations at research sites across the Twin Cities, including right here in Lake Elmo. The goal is to identify grasses that can better withstand drought and require less irrigation. First-year results are now available. FIRE OPEN HOUSE Please join us at the Lake Elmo Fire Department's annual Open House, Monday, September 28, from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm., 3880 Laverne Ave. N in Lake Elmo. This is your chance to meet your firefighters, sheriff deputies, and Lakeview EMS Staff. There will be station tours, Rescue & K9 demonstrations, car seat safety with Regions Hospital, Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, and fire prevention talks. And lots of treats, too! Seal Coating Begins Week of Aug. 31 The City will begin seal coating designated streets throughout Lake Elmo the week of Aug. 31. Residents in affected neighborhoods should watch their mailboxes for a letter with additional project information. The work helps protect pavement and extend the life of city streets. Seal coating typically takes one day on each project street, with approximately three to four days needed to complete work citywide, weather permitting. If your street is scheduled for seal coating: Remove vehicles from the street at least 24 hours before work begins. Turn off irrigation zones adjacent to the street to help keep the pavement dry. Use caution around crews and equipment and expect temporary traffic impacts. Crews will return three to five days after application to sweep up excess aggregate. Some loose aggregate during this time is normal. Thank you for helping crews complete this important street maintenance work safely and efficiently. Garbage Cans - Friendly Reminder A friendly reminder on garbage and recycling day: Please place your carts near the edge of the road, but not in the roadway. Keeping carts out of the street helps maintain a clear and safe path for drivers, pedestrians and other vehicles while still allowing collection crews easy access. Hwy 36 & Lake Elmo Ave. Interchange - Access to Hwy 36 from Lake Elmo Ave. is closed. Construction is expected to last through fall of 2027, and updates will be posted here. Hudson Blvd. between Jade Trail N. and Julia Ave. - The westbound lane of Hudson Blvd. between Jade and Julia is now closed. The closure is anticipated to last through September. County Highway 13 (Ideal Ave.) Improvement Project Open House Scheduled for Sept. 24 Washington County, in partnership with the City of Lake Elmo and the City of Oakdale, is planning an improvement project on County Highway 13 (Ideal Ave) from County Highway 6 (Stillwater Blvd) to County Highway 14 (34th St N). Community Open House Wednesday, September 2 6:00–7:30 p.m. 10928 10th St N, Lake Elmo Lake Elmo Elementary features flexible, collaborative learning spaces designed to support teamwork, creativity, and different ways of learning. The school’s design draws inspiration from the surrounding prairies and nearby Lake Elmo Park Reserve, bringing that connection to the outdoors into the 47-acre campus through expansive outdoor learning spaces. The school serves students in both the traditional English-language program and the Amigos Unidos Spanish Immersion program. Mushroom Survey Comes to Sunfish Lake Park On Sunday, Sept. 6, volunteers from the Minnesota Mycological Society will conduct Sunfish Lake Park’s first-ever mushroom survey. Beginning at 10 a.m., volunteers will spend about two hours gathering and documenting fungi before cataloging their finds. Community members are welcome to observe or participate, and Society members will be available to answer questions. The survey is part of the Society’s citizen science work to document Minnesota’s fungal diversity and contribute findings to scientific databases and collections. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Clean out the Garage Before the Cold Arrives As you tackle fall cleanup around the house and yard, don’t forget about the garage. Before freezing temperatures arrive, check for paints, chemicals and other household products that shouldn’t be left in the cold. If you find products you no longer need, don’t pour them down the drain or toss them in the trash. Take unwanted household hazardous waste to an approved HHW facility for safe disposal. A little fall cleaning now helps protect your home — and our environment. Water Wise Draining your pool or hot tub for the season? As summer winds down, remember to drain pools and hot tubs responsibly. Water containing chlorine, bromine and other chemicals can harm local waterways. Never drain water into a street or storm drain. Let chlorine dissipate before draining. Drain slowly onto grass or landscaping where water can soak into the ground. Keep water away from lakes, streams and wetlands. Only rain should go down the storm drain! Save Money on Your Water Bill In partnership with the Metropolitan Council (Met Council) the City of Lake Elmo offers a rebate program for purchases of eligible water-efficient products. The funding has enabled Lake Elmo to provide a rebate to current water customers who replace existing devices with specified water-efficient products, or who have an irrigation system audit completed by a professional.
