Regular Meeting April 10, 1995 ~J RESIDENTS REOUESTS AND COMMENTS FROM THE FLOOR: Mayor Linke explained that this portion of the meeting was designated for anyone who wished to speak to the Council on items that were not on the Agenda. There were no comments or requests from the floor. PUBLIC HEARINGS: There were no public hearings scheduled for this meeting. COUNCIL BUSINESS: A. Consideration of Action on Ordinance No. 553 Establishingt Chapter 512 of the Mounds View Municipal Code Entitled, "Cigarette and Tobacco Products" Councilmember Trude explained that this item had previously been discussed at the February 27 Regular Council Meeting and the last Work Session. The Ordinance was amended by the deletion of the clause which stated that no person under the age of 18 could sell tobacco products. The goal of the Ordinance is not to impact young people looking for jobs, but rather to keep tobacco products out of the hands of young people. The Ordinance states that any clerk who furnished tobacco products to someone under age 18 would be guilty of an administrative offense and would be fined $25. For a clerk making minimum wage, the fine would be significant. Trude remarked that the goal of the Ordinance was to get 100 percent compliance. She cited another community which adopted a similar ordinance and had 100 percent compliance--Mounds View has not yet reached that goal.
