-10-
Councilman Hodges: We have looked at this problem from several
angles. Some cities have a $10,000 on -sale license fee, but even
that would not cover the cost of one patrolman. I do understand
that the proposed fees are a substantial increase all in one lump,
and I don't mind re- examining them, especially the cabaret license.
Councilman Baumgartner: I agree with Shelquist and Hodges. The
Administrator supplied the information and we did what we had to do
with it. Apartment buildings are certainly an area to investigate.
As far as cabaret licenses, I have heard comments: "Why should
I pay the same thing as that guy when he has a squad car in front
of him all the time ?" Some areas we can look at a second time.
Councilman Pickar: You haven't had a chance to look at it and
you should have a chance to do so. I am going to look at the
cabaret license further myself. Between now and next time we get
together we can both look at things.
Mayor Johnson: From 1960 to 1973, there was no increases in any
liquor fees. That is 13 years. Do you want us to increase it each
year? You know what inflation is doing. Our costs are going up,
too. Would you be in favor of us trying to adjust these each year
so you don't get a big bump in one year?
Mr. Joe Hardinger: From $35 to $3500. No place in the world does
that.
Mr. Al Hardinger: To economize, maybe you could eliminate one
policeman.
Mayor Johnson: With the police settlement, we just couldn't
afford an additional one which the police chief wanted. The Council
has a public hearing on our budget. For the last four or five years,
there have only been three or four people here. If you want to
know where your tax dollars are going, come over.
Mr. Tony Jambor: How do we compare on an all city level as far as
salaries are concerned?
Mayor Johnson: A big portion of where our tax money is going is for
salaries.
Mr. Tony Jambor: Everyone can live with a small increase each year.
I am not arguing we shouldn't pay more money.
Mr. Chuck Hall: A fairer way to do it. I have to look at your
side as well as mine. It hits us awful hard. You are probably
right, but I haven't adjusted yet. Over a period of time it is a
little easier on us. You know there is a limit.
