The Coalition has contracted with the <br />Design Center to assist with establishin� a subregional planning base and framework, a <br />community involvement component, recommendations for ne.�ct phases of work, and strategies <br />for implementatzon. A copy of the 1997-1999 work plan is attached. <br />Fundaznental to establishing this framework is broadening rhe base of conmunity participation <br />beyond the board and community deve!opment committee to include council members, <br />appointed commissions, and i.nterested citize.ns. The Coalition is interested in exploring the full <br />spectrum of community issues from quality of life to economic development to <br />inte:�overnmental relations. The meeting on February I8 is a first step in tYus process. Puture <br />Coalition events will inGlude a Coalition-wide working session for councils and commissions to <br />be held in Vlarch or early April, and a Coalition Summit ta be held in early May. <br />C�ALITION BEiVEFITS <br />The following are potential benefits which communities can receive through panicipation i.n the <br />Coalition: <br />• Development of a common GIS -_ �, <br />• Informatioa Sharing <br />• Joint �farketing of the area <br />• Shared zesources <br />• Cost efficiency <br />• Joint efforts to i.nfluence larger issues and systems that one city alone would have <br />difficulty influencing � <br />• Ability to develop shared strategies and/or joint programs to address issues everyone has <br />in common, e.�. housing and transportation <br />• Ability to coordinate individual city efforts in. redevelopment and planniug <br />• Abiliry to use the umbrella of the Coalition to e:�plore a wide range of challenges and <br />opportunities � <br />• A forum where cities can discuss issues and agree to a�ee or disagree and work toge:he: <br />on those issues where there is a�eement <br />• An opportuniry to change ways ot doing business to make thin�s work better <br />• Provides a unique planning perspective that gene:ates greater awareness of new <br />opportunities � <br />• � Provides an opporttuvity to create a common vision and to work with other �oups � <br />ACTION REQUIltED <br />This is a discussion item so no formal action is required. <br />N:�DAT,�IGROUPS\CO M D E'V�PLANCOMNf�2- l 8-98. �tE:l4 <br />
