The ltain Cities Tree Trust ia a priva[e, non-profi[, Minnesota corpora- tion opeza[ing environmental improvement projects in the metropolitan area. The majority of their work to da[e has been in urban reforestation through coaperative mwicipal nurseries. Af[er reviewing the 1Win Ci[ies Tree Trust pas[ operations, the Parka and Recreatlon Depar[menta have made verbal co�itmen[s to the concept of a joint nursery program. The nuraexy would be located at the Poplar Lake site which is loca[ed appmximately 1/4 mile eouth of County Road J on Tur[le Lake Road in White Bear Townehip. The soil is slightly acidic sandy loam which is ideal for proper root development and excellent for removal. The final aize of the nursery is contiagent upon the indivldual municipal tree ordera but we are looking at approximately 5 acres in s1ze. Ae can be noted the costa will he approximately 5700.00/municipality or $3,500.00 total based on 5 co�mities. The 5 co�unitiea that have been tentatively eo�itted include, Mounda View, Shoreviem� Nev Hrighton� St. Anthony and Maplewood. In addition to Che ini[ial $700.00 capital outlay, the present agreement vith Rameey Co�mty which Se tfie owner of the aite is [hat each munici- pa11ty muet donate 1$ of their [reee ro the County in 11eu of rent. The need for reForeatation in the City looms ever larger, as we have removed 2065 dieeased [rees in the past 4 years. The potential of the nursery is endleas, from replan[ing neighborhood parke to making them available [o residents on a reduced charge. As there ace Iw moniee alloca[ed for [his expenditure in the 1978 budget, etaff reco�ends that $1,500.00 be aet aside from the park and playground fund; to pay Mounde Viev'e initial firat year coat and to order $800.00 of lzee etock to begin our nursery. �: :
