Mounds View Business News April 2012
• Online Sales Tax—How Does it Affect Your Business?
Mounds View business owner Larry Lucast wants fellow business owners to contact their legislators to discuss the
importance of mandating Internet and catalog vendors to charge their customers sales tax. Larry owns Corvette
Specialties, located at 2558 County Road 10 in Mounds View. He and his staff hear regularly that customers will purchase
items online to avoid paying sales tax.
Contact information for State legislators that represent Mounds View:
Representative Tom Tillberry Senator Pam Wolf
Email: rep.tom.tillberry(a.house.mn Email: sen.pam.wolf@senate.mn
Phone: 651-296-5510 Phone: 651-296-2556
Nationally, any company that sells items online must charge sales tax in the states in which the business has a retail
physical presence. Although Minnesota law states that if you, as a business or individual, buy from an out-of-state vendor,
and are not charged sales tax, you must pay it to Minnesota. However, even though companies like Best Buy have to
charge sales tax in most states, Amazon has no retail stores, so they never have to charge sales tax.
The Federal government has proposed a law that requires big, online companies to charge sales tax, which would level
the playing field for small, local retailers. The proposed law actually gives local retailers a small advantage because they
would not have to charge sales tax on their out-of-state sales as long as total sales were less than $1 million. In Larry's
opinion, the proposed law would give small, local retailers a chance to grow, yet not become too big at the expense of
even smaller retailers.
For more information on this issue, please email Larry at Parts(aCorvetteSpecialties.com and contact your legislators
today to discuss how online sales tax affects your business!
•
TECHNOLOGY SUMMITTo register for
the Technology
Summit, please
MICRO AGENDA: contact the
Twin
CitiesNorth CONTROL 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm -Featured Speaker-Leif Knutson-Microsoft Chamber at
Mnrosoft raffle and give-aways for each attendee) 763-571-9781.
Iji3iVIP! 11'v' 2:10 pm to 2:50 pm -first breakout session
Chamber
1)Not all apps are Angry Birds...
