Item No. 6C
Meeting Date: January 18, 2008
Type of Business: EDC
City of Mounds View Staff Report •
11111.11111111111111.
To: Economic Development Commission
From: Heidi Steinmetz, Economic Development Specialist
Item Title/Subject: Discuss Public Communications and Marketing
Background:
The City of Mounds View does not have a comprehensive public communications
or marketing plan for the City. It is important to adopt such plans and strategies if
the City is interested in effectively expending its marketing dollars rather than
conducting "random marketing". It is also important if the City would like to
portray a certain image to its current and potential residents and businesses in
addition to the development and redevelopment communities.
4111 Discussion:
Staff is interested in the EDC's thoughts regarding this issue because staff has
received an advertising request from the Twin Cities North Chamber's advertising
consultant. In the past, the City has expended $1,000 of its marketing dollars on
placing an ad in the Twin Cities North Chamber map. Does the EDC feel that
expending these dollars is the highest and best utilization of the EDA's marketing
funds?
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that an assessment be completed of the City's public
communications and marketing efforts to date in order to assist the City in
forming public communications and marketing goals. The assessment could be
completed by a third party public communications and marketing expert in order
to achieve an unbiased viewpoint.
Respectfully submitted,
Heidi Steinmetz
Economic Development Specialist
