Mounds View City Council February 11, 2013 <br />Regular Meeting Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />Council Member Mueller requested further information about Commissioner Huffman’s past <br />City government experience. Commissioner Huffman noted he had served as a Shoreview City <br />Councilmember and chaired the Economic Development Authority. He explained Shoreview <br />was working to recreate its commercial areas. <br /> <br />Council Member Meehlhause questioned how the new development was brought into Shoreview. <br />Commissioner Huffman stated a great deal of TIF was offered, along with the formation of an <br />Economic Development Committee. <br /> <br />Mayor Flaherty stated Mounds View was working to redevelop its commercial district along the <br />County Road 10 corridor. He then discussed the expense of renaming the corridor in further <br />detail and questioned if the County had any answers on why the expense went from $60,000 to <br />$400,000. Commissioner Huffman did not understand the reason behind this change either and <br />stated he would be willing to work with the City further in taking this matter to the State. <br /> <br />Mayor Flaherty indicated the second issue of concern for the City was a sound wall for the Laport <br />neighborhood across from Medtronic. He commented the noise during rush hour was becoming <br />a concern. Commissioner Huffman stated he would investigate this matter further. <br /> <br />Council Member Meehlhause questioned if the City would be able to plant trees or further <br />landscape the median along the County Road 10 corridor. Commissioner Huffman stated he <br />would discuss this matter with County staff and report back to the City. <br /> <br />Mayor Flaherty thanked Commissioner Huffman for his attendance this evening and for <br />addressing the City’s concerns. <br /> <br /> B. Presentation by Jerry Hromatka, President and CEO of Northwest Youth <br />and Family Services <br /> <br />Jerry Hromatka, Northwest Youth and Family Services, thanked the Council for their time this <br />evening. He noted NYFS was supported by 15 municipalities along with local corporations and <br />organizations. He provided a summary of the organization’s beginning and discussed the <br />services provided by his organization to the City of Mounds View. He explained NYFS focused <br />on 5-21 year olds and noted 4,500 youth, families and individuals were served on a yearly basis. <br />He discussed the three main program areas of NYFS as being mental health services, youth <br />development and day treatment programs. He provided comment on the importance of preparing <br />youth for job interviews and further education. <br /> <br />Mr. Hromatka reviewed the finances and highlights from 2012, stating corporate partnerships <br />and social media were at the forefront. He explained NYFS recently merged with the White Bear <br />Lake Youth Services. He stated NYFS was proposing to rename their organization to Northeast <br />Youth and Family Services. He then thanked the Council for their continued support and looked <br />forward to all those that would be helped in 2013. <br />
