On 5-18-2017 our K-9 team showed off their skills for the kids at Edgewood
Middle School. The kids are taking a class in "Careers with Animals". Niko
showed off his skills in obedience, article searches, apprehensions, and narcotics
searches, and handler protection. This was well received by the kids and staff.
In June the K9 team was deployed 8 times:
These include tracking suspects, assisting in making arrests, public demonstrations
and vehicle searches.
On 6-9-2017, Officers were called to the 7600 block of Woodlawn Drive for an
active burglary. The homeowner came home and the suspect ran out of the house.
Officers tracked with K9 Niko for the suspect.
On 6-9-2017, K9 Niko was requested to assist the NBPD with apprehending a
felony warrant suspect. Officers gained entry into the suspect's apartment
building. Officers gave the K9 announcement and the suspect responded that he
gives up and came outside. K9 Niko continued as a deterrent as the suspect was
taken into custody.
On 6-25-2017 K9 Niko competed in the annual USPCA Police Dog Trial
Certifications. Niko certified to continue working as a Police Dog and achieved
perfect scores in suspect searches, agility, and suspect apprehension with gunfire.
K9 Niko earned first place in Agility and received a nice trophy for his efforts.
On 6-23-2017 Officer was called to the 5100 block of Program Ave for a vehicle
sniff. The vehicle was believed to have narcotics inside. K9 Niko conducted an
interior sniff of the vehicle. Marijuana and paraphernalia were located in the
vehicle.
