ov,.9 N. 22. 1999 E 9: 18AM,16391KRAUS-ANDERSON CALVIN ACADEMY NO, 5154 "AP. 04
UNDERACM1EV;1,NG
Students develop an "inner sense" of their potential as early as three years old. It is a positive feeling to work
to full potential. It is a negative feeling to do badly and have a "failing" feeling. It is human nature to do whac
'feels good". That is wily we have found that there usually is a good xeason why students are underachieving,
Often they are told they arc* not trying hard enough and lack motivation. Quite the opposite could be true.
They might have a problem that must be solved, and unlock their full potential.
Underdeveloped Skills
A student can have "gaps' itr their education. They didn't master certain segments of the basic skills. Perhaps
they had an ineffective reacher; health problems, or family stress. They "fall through the cracks" until they
have signifteant problems that can't be ignored. We know how to pinpoint exactly what $kills they are missing.
We then teach thane skills ro mastery.
The Hidden Learning Problems
There are over 40 different cognitive "thinking" skills that all students use to acquire ne- information and
build knowledge. One or more of elle cognitive skills might not develop appropriately, even for intelligent
students. This becomeK an undetected learning problem. The students feel like there is a "glass wall" in front
of them, They just don't seem to be able to learn what appears relatively easy to others. Instead of getting the
help they need, they get the blame for the low marks. Soon they stop trying and often develop a feeling they
MV "dumb".
The Solution is to Find the Problem
Our affiliated Calvin Clinic has a unique eompmhcnsive evaluation. Our clinicians do pot rest to label a
student or for placement. We tesr to diagnose the problem and prescribe the training. There is no cost for
the evalustlom Our to+tinct can be a supplement to previous evaluations to give us additional information.
Ir. is; ssil FREE.
We Have the Instruction to Help Cognitive Problems
Once a problem is detected, we know how to solve it. These cognitive skills include visual and auditory
information processing, short and long terra memory, reasoning, thinking, logia, oral language, processing
speed, concept famarion. spatial relations, and many more. We specialize in very unique instruction that
improves these skills se, that they don't stand in the students way of success, We have the expertise to
administer the effective intervendon. 71le Calvin Academy is the only Minnesota school to offer cognitive
instruction.
