Engineering/GIS Intern Position Description Page 2/3 <br /> <br />PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS <br /> Completion of at least one year of college or technical school coursework. <br /> Proficient with ArcView computer software programs. <br /> Familiarity with municipal infrastructure and facilities. <br /> Experience with working with drawings and survey documents. <br /> <br />NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES <br /> Skill and knowledge in the operation of AutoCAD and/or ArcView computer software <br />programs. <br /> Skill and knowledge in using computers to maintain records and electronic files; prepare <br />letters, memos, and reports; correspond via e-mail; and research using the internet. <br /> General knowledge of the principals and practices of drafting for construction plans, details, <br />maps, exhibits, and other visual displays. <br /> General knowledge of the principals and practices of geographic information systems (GIS). <br /> Skill and ability to be well organized with a keen attention to details and neatness. <br /> Ability to solve basic math and design problems. <br /> Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications, maps, O&M manuals, and <br />other technical documents. <br /> Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing. <br /> Ability to assist with performing fieldwork, including surveying, utility locates, traffic counts, <br />construction inspection, and other similar activities. <br /> <br />SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS <br />None. <br /> <br />WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS <br />The work environment and physical demands described herein is representative of those that <br />must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. <br />Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the <br />essential functions. <br /> <br />Work for this job is located in both indoor and outdoor environments. The indoor work <br />environment is typically in a HVAC-conditioned office setting with quiet to moderate noise levels. <br />Job duties also require exposure to outdoor conditions year-round, including adverse weather <br />conditions and outdoor areas under heavy/highway, utility, or facility construction. The <br />employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places <br />and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, <br />toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. <br /> <br />The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or <br />operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms and occasionally climb or <br />balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell. Visual acuity sufficient to evaluate field <br />conditions, construction practices and work done, and plans and drawings is necessary, as is <br />the ability to communicate orally in person and over the telephone. Specific vision abilities <br />include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the <br />ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and <br />occasionally up to 100 pounds.
