Item No: 07D
Meeting Date: February 22, 2016
Type of Business: CB
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: James Ericson, City Administrator
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8526 Approving Participation in the Minnesota
GreenStep Cities Program

Introduction:

The GreenStep Cities program aims to provide Minnesota cities a clear pathway to
greater sustainability based upon implementing best practices specific to Minnesota
cities of differing sizes and capabilities. Due to the multiple environmental, economic
and social dimensions of the best practices, leadership from the city council is needed
to oversee their implementation and integration with other city and community activities
and with other governmental jurisdictions as may be appropriate.

Discussion:

Staff has already worked through the GreenStep Cities “Checklist” and have identified
numerous areas where we already satisfy entry level requirements. At this point, to join
the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program as a Step One city, Mounds View would need
to adopt a GreenStep Cities participation resolution that names a contact person to be
the City’s GreenStep coordinator. This person can be an existing city staff person, an
elected official or an appointed community member. After internal discussions with
staff, it was determined the Public Works Director Brian Erickson would be best suited
to serve as the appointed coordinator for the program.

Recommendation:

Approve Resolution 8526 formalizing the City’s intent to participate in the Minnesota
GreenStep Cities Program and appointing Public Works Director Brian Erickson to be
the GreenStep Cities Program Coordinator for the City of Mounds View

Respectfully submitted,

________________________
James Ericson
City Administrator
