From the desk of:
Voice Mail: (612)717-4003
flj,
NDS Dan Coughlin
Phone: (612)717-4000
o; Mayor of Mounds View OM Fax: (612)784-3462
A
r°- ess • Partners
March 24, 1999
Dear Mr. Mueller,
I just wanted to write you a personal note thanking you for your comments at the Council Meeting
this past Monday. I do recall your statements in years past and hopefully we all can now work
towards dealing with the problems you so eloquently stated.
I did talk directly with the Police Chief first thing the next morning and he told me that you would be
contacted by someone in the department regarding your concerns. In addition, the Chief did tell me
that a patrol officer will be put completely on traffic control in the very near future and that this has
been in the works for some time now.
As I told you at the meeting, even I have problems with speeders on my road despite the horrible
condition of the road surface. I do not get any preferential treatment with extra patrols on my street
simply because I am Mayor. This thankless job simply does not carry with it any major power to
affect the police department in this way. Case in point, the other day I was ticketed for having expired
tabs on my old pickup truck by one of Mounds View's officers. I was granted no winks or warnings -
I got a ticket for $50, period.
Hopefully we can slowly turn the tide on speeders. As I talk with other city leaders in the Metro area,
I have come to understand that speeding on residential roads seems to be a cultural change more than
anything. Everyone seems to be struggling with more people rushing here and there for all kinds of
reasons.
However, even with that in mind, I believe this city has an obligation to try to stem the tide of this
speeding phenomenon because it is a huge safety issue for kids and adults alike. I will continue to
attempt to deal with such matters while keeping in mind that this city has a finite amount of resources
to address this and a thousand other problems in this town.
Again, I thank you for your input. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional comments
or concerns.
Sincerely,
(062,,7"' /(-- i
Dan Coughlin
Mayor of Mounds View
E-mail: DanC@isd.net
vb
ta
rePRINTED INK WET„TM 2401 Highway 10• Mounds View, MN 55112-1499
SOY recycled paper
Equal Opportunity Employer
