'� �� F <br /> I <br /> -.--_.___ _ <br /> The detailed level of information shown on this map from the City of Roseville is <br /> indicative of the type of cross jurisdictional analysis that can be performed. <br /> Description <br /> A Geographic Information System(GIS)is a computer-based mapping tool that is able <br /> to analyze a wide range of data across a geographic area and display the information <br /> spatially in a manner that can be quickly and easily understood. The types of informa- <br /> tion involved typically include census data,natural resources,transportation data,land <br /> use, housing data, and other data sets that are relevant to the area being investigated. <br /> Once this information is gathered, it can be analyzed and displayed in any number of <br /> configurations to allow the user to better discern underlying patterns. <br /> III Potential Benefits to Coalition Members <br /> The Coalition is constructing a subregional GIS data base that will provide a more <br /> efficient,more effective,and less expensive method of sharing and coordinating infor- <br /> mation between member cities. This shared data base will help the Coalition identify <br /> trends within the subregion,recognize the needs of its residents,and assist in develop- <br /> ing programs and policies that address these needs. For example, manipulating this <br /> data will allow users to: <br /> • analyze social demographic information in ways that enable Coalition cities <br /> to evaluate how effectively policies, services, and programs meet such <br /> residents' needs as housing,transit and transportation, and job training; <br /> • identify sites suitable for development and redevelopment by applying <br /> search criteria for querying the GIS base(incorporating information on soil <br /> types, floodplains, wetlands,transportation networks, zoning, etc.); <br /> • coordinate land uses across city lines to avoid conflicts between new <br /> development and existing uses and maximize development opportunities; <br /> 1-35W Coalition Corridor Briefing Book 15 <br />
