2
Forestry Highlights Continued...
Nearly one half mile(2,260') of vibratory plow line was installed in Mounds View in 1997
to control oak wilt disease. This was a record high for any one year.
Large tree trimming along boulevards and in parks was done by aCity-contracted firm with
a bucket truck and chipper. Nearly 500 trees were done in this manner. Another 300 smaller
to mid-sized trees were pruned by forestry staff.
The annual tree sale resulted in 60 new trees being planted in Mounds View
$ mss
J 3 Y•a i. + 4<  S
ice*, , i . 4 4 `
=t s - ." While many of the elms removed were "Chinese" or"Siberian" and likely the result
of weather-related die back, the oak losses were most unexpected after serval years of declining
disease losses. Thanks to a Federal/State oak wilt control grant, all new infection outbreaks were
contained by cutting root grafts with a vibratory plow. The prospect of high numbers of continued
losses remains,however, as adjacent trees die off up to the plow line of disruption. It is imperative
that these trees be removed as they die to reduce or eliminate the chance for new overland spread.
