1997 PARK IMPROVEMENTS
The following is a list of park activities that should be noted as happening in 1997:
1. Security System was installed at Silver View Park picnic shelter. This system detects
movements at the shelter after curfew hours triggering a auditory horn and automatically
informing police if the building is being hit. It is expected that less vandalism will result
eliminating the high cost of building repairs from damages by vandals.
2. New playground equipment was purchased and installed at Groveland Park. Old
equipment was evaluated and components that were yet in good condition were kept and
integrated into the new equipment structure. Longevity of the new equipment is expected
to be 10 years. Landscaping of the play area will be completed in Spring, 1998.
3. Lakeside Park Picnic Shelter was re-shingled and repairs were made to the roof. The
picnic shelter is in good shape and has much use. This was a joint venture with Spring
Lake Park Parks crew.
4. Mats were installed under homeplate areas at Silver View Park. This was done to
alleviate the constant digging of softball/baseball players which creates a hole at
homeplate. This is both a safety hazard as well as a hindering maintenance.
5. Ardan Park Compost Facility was improved, which serves to enhance the aesthetics of
the park. Ramsey County was granted approval by the City of Mounds View at the cities
request to improve the site so that it was more aesthetically pleasing. Improvements
included new fencing, lighting, entry and exit improvements, and increased signage.
Landscaping is yet to be completed in the Spring of 1998.
6. Woodcrest Park building was repaired. The water table in this park is so high that the
moisture that surrounds the building during wet times is rotting the joists and siding and
even the indoor paneling. New siding and boards replaced those that were the worst.
New floor boards and inside wall boards were also replaced. The old furnace was
repaired. At some point this building will have seen its last year and plans should be
discussed as to what to do when the building needs to be taken down.
7. Woodcrest Park Community Gardens were established including the installation of a
water line leading from the water hydrant to a spicket near the gardens. A garden shed
was purchased for equipment storage. Twenty garden plots were measured, plotted, roto-
tilled and cultivated. Participant evaluations were positive except for the problem of weed
control. It has been suggested that weed control be sprayed early Spring to help alleviate
the weeds.
8. New athletic field grooming vehicle was purchased. This groomer is used every day,
all day early Spring to late Fall grooming and preparing athletic fields.
