• Community Center building or its activities. They, as with the youth, would participate in those
discussions and reports having to do with their subject and would be considered advisors to the
Commission. This approach further opens participation but not by adding work to staff or confusing
the Council relations with yet another board.
These are my thoughts and if the Council wishes, these or other ideas could be formalized in writing
and discussed with the Parks and Recreation Commission in the coming weeks, perhaps in a joint
session.
In other business, part of the week has been devoted to attempting to get hearings in the House and
Senate on our airport legislation. Bob Long and Mayor McCarty visited the Capital separately on
Thursday on this, and I have met with the administrators of Lexington and Circle Pines. Bob was
told late Thursday the house will schedule it before the Local Government and Metropolitan Affairs
Committee. If this is so, some of us will likely have to go down and testify. The Senate will
hopefully schedule a hearing once the House has. The political hurdles are interesting.
Rick Jopke and I met with Dave Maroney on the Mermaid project and I have been trying to meet
with each of you on aspects of the project. If you haven't talked with me yet, please give me a call.
The two LELS bargaining units are essentially on hold. We are awaiting word on mediation for the
patrol unit, likely in March, and the sergeants' meetings will now wait until spring when insurance
premium information comes in. I am hoping to sometime get back to the public works agreement
in time for Council action in March.
Everest has contacted me regarding the building N project and now apparently are willing to proceed
as the City last offered. I have talked with Jim O'Meara about finalizing the documents and he is
proceeding.
The Mayor and I attended the second meeting of the regional athletic facilities concept Tuesday
night. Different possibilities were reviewed. It appears nothing substantial will happen on the
arsenal site for some time so interest turned to evaluating existing fields and buildings for a more
coordinated approach to recreation in the district. This will likely lead to discussions about city
maintenance of school grounds as well.
That's it for now. See you on Monday.
•
