liaisons assigned to various boards, I think you may want to consider a more formal and regular
schedule of face to face meetings to go over common concerns. While it may be easy to anticipate
many interesting scenarios and motives for Monday evening, basically I suspect most of your boards'
members are concerned about what they can contribute to the community. I would recommend, if
the opportunity presents itself Monday, the Council set up a joint meeting with the EDC and consider
similar meetings with other boards to review issues, processes, understandings and misunderstandings
between the board and the Council. One town I worked in actually started an annual all city board
city council meeting and dinner to discuss common issues and priories for the coming year, as well
as to show appreciation for community involvement. That may be more than is needed this Monday
evening, but attention to legitimate concerns can maintain positive relations with your boards. It is
also a difficult breach to bridge for staff when duties dictate working and facilitating on both ends.
That may also explain some of my interest in seeing improvements in this area.
Next week Julie Trude, Lynette Morgan and I will be at the LMC conference in Rochester. I always
look forward to the LMC conference and spending time with council members and with other cities'
council members. We will let you know how it turns out. Have a good weekend.
