Item No: 7E
Meeting Date: May 26, 2015
Type of Business: Council Business
Administrator Review : ____
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Thomas Kinney, Chief of Police
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8418 for Approval to Purchase Nine Automated
External Defibrillators (AED’s)

Introduction:

The police department equips police vehicles with automated external defibrillators
(AED’s) to use during response to medical emergency calls in the event of a cardiac
arrest. In addition, there are 4 locations in city owned buildings that have AED’s
available for public use. There are a total of 15 AED units in the squads and city
buildings.

Last year, the police department determined our supply of automated external
defibrillators, acquired in 2006, would no longer be supported by the manufacturer,
Physio Control, beginning in 2015. It is critical that these life saving devices be reliable
and dependable. Therefore, six of those units were replaced last year with new units
from Philips. Those units were purchased through donated funds from Bethlehem
Baptist Church and an Allina Health Heart Safe grant.

Discussion:

In order to fully replace the remaining nine units still being used, an amount of $14,400
was budgeted in 2015 to fund the total purchase.

The total cost to purchase the requested Philips AED’s totals $11,707.20, which
includes a trade in credit for the old AED units.

Recommendation:

Staff is requesting council approval for the purchase of nine Philips automated external
defibrillators (AED’s) at a total cost of $11,707.20.

Respectfully Submitted,

__________________
Thomas Kinney
Chief of Police
