The department has an officer assigned to Edgewood Middle School for the entire <br />school year. This position is held by Officer Ben Knitter who provides a wide range of <br />duties from security, enforcement, counseling and general assistance to the staff and <br />student body. All of this works toward the goal of maintaining successful and safe <br />school operations. During the summer months this position returns to patrol duties. <br />The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which <br />include the following: <br />® assisting with traffic flow in front of the school <br />® ensuring the school is secured each morning <br />• providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the <br />cafeteria during lunch times <br />® investigating crimes that occur on school property <br />® assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills <br />® serving as a member of the school crisis team <br />® assisting at Pinewood Elementary as needed <br />® being a liaison between the school and the police department <br />® forming positive relationships with students <br />From October thru December, the SRO made the following incident reports: <br />® 1 disorderly conduct <br />® 2 assaults <br />® 3 assist other agencies <br />• 3 child abuse/neglects <br />• 2 medicals <br />® 1 follow up from patrol <br />Those cases resulted in the following: 2 juvenile court petitions and 1 juvenile <br />transported to the hospital for evaluation. <br />Some additional services the SRO provided at the school this quarter included: <br />® counseling students about making good decisions <br />® assisting the deans with using the school surveillance system to investigate <br />cases of theft and bullying <br />® escorting unwanted persons from the school building <br />® deescalating out of control students <br />® transporting students as requested by the school <br />® assisting other police departments with investigations pertaining to Edgewood <br />students <br />® locating truant students <br />® counseling students about gang activity <br />® assisting deans with locker searches as requested <br />
