5 <br /> <br /> <br />School Resource Officer (SRO) <br /> <br /> <br />The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which include <br />the following: <br />• assisting with traffic flow in front of the school, <br />• ensuring the school is secured each morning, <br />• providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the cafeteria <br />during lunch times, <br />• investigating crimes that occur on school property, <br />• assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills, <br />• attending school dances and after school activities, <br />• assisting at Pinewood Elementary, <br />• being a liaison between the school and the police department, <br />• forming positive relationships with students, <br /> <br />From January to March, the SRO made the following incident reports: <br />• 1 child abuse, <br />• 1 disorderly conduct, <br />• 1 warrant arrest, <br />• 1 possession of marijuana, <br />• 1 harassment, <br />• 1 recovered stolen property, <br />• 1 medical assist. <br />From those cases, 3 students were cited/petitioned and 2 were sent to the Northwest Youth <br />and Family Services Diversion Program. <br /> <br />Some of the day to day issues that the SRO assisted the school with during the first quarter <br />included: <br />• transporting students to the out of school suspension program, <br />• picking up truant students, <br />• counseling students about the law, <br />• mediating student disputes, <br />• deescalating out of control students, <br />• using the security cameras to assist the deans with locating acts of bullying and theft, <br />• meeting with parents concerned about the safety of their students, <br />• advising parents and teachers on Facebook/internet crimes, <br />• counseling students about sexual harassment and “sexting”, <br />• advising parents regarding their child’s behavior problems at home, <br />• removing unwanted persons from the school, <br />• assisting other police departments with investigations related to Edgewood students. <br /> <br />Highlights from 1st Quarter <br />• The SRO continued to work closely with the school to target students with high <br />numbers of tardies and absences. He meets with those students on a regular basis to <br />counsel them and set goals for improvement in those areas. <br />
