5 School Resource Officer (SRO) The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which include the following: • assisting with traffic flow in front of the school, • ensuring the school is secured each morning, • providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the cafeteria during lunch times, • investigating crimes that occur on school property, • assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills, • attending school dances and after school activities, • assisting at Pinewood Elementary, • being a liaison between the school and the police department, • forming positive relationships with students, From January to March, the SRO made the following incident reports: • 1 child abuse, • 1 disorderly conduct, • 1 warrant arrest, • 1 possession of marijuana, • 1 harassment, • 1 recovered stolen property, • 1 medical assist. From those cases, 3 students were cited/petitioned and 2 were sent to the Northwest Youth and Family Services Diversion Program. Some of the day to day issues that the SRO assisted the school with during the first quarter included: • transporting students to the out of school suspension program, • picking up truant students, • counseling students about the law, • mediating student disputes, • deescalating out of control students, • using the security cameras to assist the deans with locating acts of bullying and theft, • meeting with parents concerned about the safety of their students, • advising parents and teachers on Facebook/internet crimes, • counseling students about sexual harassment and “sexting”, • advising parents regarding their child’s behavior problems at home, • removing unwanted persons from the school, • assisting other police departments with investigations related to Edgewood students. Highlights from 1st Quarter • The SRO continued to work closely with the school to target students with high numbers of tardies and absences. He meets with those students on a regular basis to counsel them and set goals for improvement in those areas.
