Staff invited Ms. McKeown to provide a similar presentation to the City
Council at their May work session.
Discussion:
As referenced in the attached materials and on their website, Minnesota GreenStep Cities
is a voluntary challenge, assistance and recognition program to help cities achieve their
sustainability and quality -of -life goals. This free continuous improvement program,
managed by a public-private partnership, is based upon 28 best practices. Each best
practice can be implemented by completing one or more actions at a 1, 2 or 3 -star level,
from a list of four to eight actions. These actions are tailored to all Minnesota cities, focus
on cost savings and energy use reduction, and encourage civic innovation.
The best practices are organized into the following broad categories: Buildings and
Lighting, Land use, Transportation, Environmental Management, and Economic and
Community Development. The 28 "best practices," some of which the City has already
addressed, are attached for your reference.
Recommendation:
Consider the information and presentation provided by Diana McKeown relating to the
Minnesota GreenStep Cities program.
Respectfully submitted,
James Ericson
City Administrator
