Item No: 7A
Meeting Date: July 9, 2012
Type of Business: Council Business
Administrator Review: ____

City of Mounds View Staff Report

To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Desaree Crane, Assistant City Administrator and
Nick DeBar, Public Works Director
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 7966, Approving a Wage Increase for Adam Fogerty,
Engineering/GIS Intern

Background/Discussion:
The Engineering/GIS Intern is a temporary, part-time position geared toward current or
recent college students in a related field. This employment arrangement allows Public
Works to obtain skilled help at a fraction of the cost of hiring a full-time, regular employee.
Current Public Works Staff have extensive experience and skill in working with AutoCAD
and ArcGIS, the software programs already owned by the City, which will, in turn, allow a
current or recent college student to obtain “real world”, on-the-job experience resulting in a
“win-win” situation. The position is fully funded by the Water and Sanitary Sewer Enterprise
Funds and has no impact on the General Fund. Each internship cycle is typically one to
three years, and there is no guarantee made or implied for this duration and the position
could be eliminated by the City Council at any time.

The City Council approved the hiring of Adam Fogerty for the intern position on May 23,
2011 (Res. 7793). Mr. Fogerty was hired at the rate of $11.75 per hour without benefits,
and would be eligible for a wage increase to $12.50 per hour after 12 months of
employment and a satisfactory performance evaluation. Mr. Fogerty began employment
with the City on May 31, 2011 and has performed his duties in a satisfactory manner as
indicated on his last performance evaluation.

Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the attached resolution approving an hourly
wage increase for Adam Fogerty from $11.75 to $12.50 effective May 31, 2012.

Respectfully submitted,

Nick DeBar - Public Works Director

Attachments:
• Resolution 7966
