Res. 8007 Approving Non-Standard Street Design for Edgewood Drive in Area F
Page 2
Proposed pedestrian/bicycle accommodations on Edgewood Drive is considered a north-south
connection located in the central part and civic center of the city. There is existing sidewalk on
Edgewood south of Bronson on both sides of the street extending to the County 10 trail system.
There is also existing sidewalks on County Road I east and west of Edgewood on both sides of
the street. A sidewalk also exists in the south boulevard of Bronson Drive from Edgewood Drive to
Quincy Street. Although pedestrian traffic counts are not available, it is safe to assume that there
would be sufficient traffic volume on this street section, as key links to this corridor already exist
south of Bronson and along County Road I and Bronson Drive. Constructing accommodations on
this segment of Edgewood Drive will complete the connection along this corridor between County
Road I and the civic center (City Hall and Community Center) and the many other paths that
terminate in this vicinity.

The notice sent to property owners on this segment of Edgewood included recommended options
and a feedback portion (see attached). The recommended options by the design engineers and
Committee included a parking lane on the west side, at a minimum, with a potential parking lane
on the east side. Options for pedestrian/bicycle accommodations included either an 11-foot off-
street multi-use trail or a 6.5-foot wide concrete sidewalk. The trail and sidewalk are both
recommended to be located in the west boulevard.

Only three feeback forms were received by property owners along the corridor. Although it is
difficult to get an overall preference with such little feedback, support for a sidewalk or trail was
split. There appears to be a preference for a sidewalk over the multi-use trail option. In addition,
parking on both sides of the street was preferred over the west side only. The Committee
reviewed the feedback at their October meeting and recommended (4-0) for the sidewalk option in
the west boulevard with parking lanes located on both sides of the street. A typical section
showing this recommendation is attached to this report.

Recommendation:
Engineering staff and the Streets and Utilities Committee recommend that the City Council
consider adopting the attached resolution approving a 38-foot wide (curb face to curb face) street
design for Edgewood Drive between Bronson Drive (south) and County Road I. The typical street
section includes two 11-foot drive lanes, 8-foot wide parallel parking lanes on both sides, and a
6.5-foot wide concrete sidewalk immediately behind the curb in the west boulevard.

Respectfully submitted,

Nick DeBar - Public Works Director

Attachments:
Resolution 8007 with Recommended Typical Section
Edgewood Drive Design Notice
