Don Peterson
Generator Report
Feb 28, 2011
Page 2

In addition, some site work will be required for installation and includes a 10-foot by 20-foot
concrete slab and three-sided fence with gate. The concrete slab will be placed adjacent to the
building in the Police parking lot and the fence is recommended to be installed around the unit
for public safety and protection. Although removals and preparation of the concrete slab will be
performed in-house, the cost for the concrete slab and fencing has not been solicited yet and
costs are unknown but are not expected to exceed roughly $8,000. Staff is requesting Council
approval to proceed with the generator purchase (with components) and site work (concrete
slab and fencing) for a total project budget cost not to exceed $25,000. Staff will solicit
competitive quotes on the slab and fencing construction.

The adopted 2011 Budget includes $65,000 under Special Projects (280-4180-7030) for the
alternate power supply at City Hall. The estimated costs savings between the proposed costs
and budget costs is $40,000 or more.

Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council consider adopting Resolution 7746 that will allow Staff
to move ahead with the purchase of the used 2001 80-kw Onan emergency generator from
SASP for $5,000.00, with the additions of the protective weather enclose, silencer kit, 140-
gallon fuel tank from Magnus Inc. at a cost of $9,750 plus tax, and construction of a concrete
slab and fencing for a total estimated costs not to exceed $25,000.

Respectfully submitted,

Don Peterson - Public Works Supervisor

Attachments:
Resolution 7747
