PAGE 3 <br />BUILDING/FIRE OFFICIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS <br />Residential Sprinkler Facts <br />Sprinklers are HEAT activated. <br />Residential sprinkler heads activate at 155 degrees F. <br />One or two sprinkler heads will contain a fire. <br />They produce less water damage than a fire hose. <br />Expel 8−16 gallons per minute (gpm) per head vs. 150 gpm for a fire hose. <br />Can be retro-fit for existing homes. <br />May be installed as part of your plumbing system. <br />Receive insurance discounts of up to 25%. <br />COST−about 1−1.5 % of a new home’s cost. <br />Can be installed on a well system. <br />3000+ Americans die in residential fires each year. <br />No more maintenance than for your existing plumbing system. <br />Less maintenance needed than for smoke alarms. <br />Like having a firefighter in your home 24/7/365. <br />Protects firefighters from the dangers of light frame construction <br />(structural failures). <br />Fire is controlled by the time the fire trucks get to your house. <br />An investigation by City staff at 5279 Greenfield <br />revealed that the homeowner was using his garage <br />as a spray booth for auto body repair. Follow up by <br />staff included making sure the re-built garage meets <br />the provisions of the fire code in order to ensure the <br />safety of the neighborhood. <br /> <br />Kathi conducted CPR and Fire Extinguisher train- <br />ing for City employees. <br /> <br />Kathi began studying community risk reduction <br />with the hope of being accepted to the National Fire <br />Academy to formally pursue this training and to intro- <br />duce new safety strategies in Mounds View. <br /> <br />City staff and the fire department created a public <br />mailing in response to residents’ concerns about <br />smoke alarm systems that a company was promoting <br />and then selling to seniors through scare tactics. The <br />mailing went out with the water bill and reminded <br />people to check smoke alarms, change the batteries <br />every year, replace the alarms every 10 years and <br />contact the fire department with any questions about <br />alarms or to schedule a free home safety survey. <br />This was a joint effort between the City and the Fire <br />Department in conjunction with fire prevention week. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Jeremiah and Kathi continue to respond to fire calls – <br />to extinguish and to investigate. Jeremiah responds <br />to fire calls during the daytime and he volunteers to <br />respond to fire calls at night to help protect our com- <br />munity. Kathi also responds to fire calls during the <br />daytime and she volunteers as a Fire & Life Safety <br />Educator during her off time – all to help keep our <br />community safe. <br />The City lost the services of <br />two inspectors in 2010. The <br />remaining City staff sorely <br />misses the help and knowl- <br />edge that Don Burda and Jeff <br />Baker provided the City.
