May 9, 2011 City Council Meeting Item 7C Resolution 7777 City staff received two quotes in 2009 to remove and reconstruct a new monument sign for the Community Center and the quotes were too substantial ($7,200 and $10,100 plus permit fees). That is why staff determined that the best “bang for our buck” would be to install very large lettering directly onto the Community Center building because it would be more visible than a monument sign. Plus, the cost of lettering for the building is a small fraction ($1,860 + permit fees) of the cost to relocate the monument sign. Funding Funding for the lettering would come from the undesignated Bethlehem Baptist Church donation received by the Mounds View Economic Development Authority (EDA) on January 28, 2011 in the amount of $2,871.50. Staff is recommending the lowest quote received, which is $1,860 + permit fees to install 18-inch painted plastic lettering. The plastic letters have a lifetime guarantee. Lighting The proposed lettering will not be visible at night. If the City Council wishes, lighting for the sign may be installed at a later date. One option would be for City staff to obtain quotes for lighting to be paid for from the EDA’s remaining Bethlehem Baptist donation funds from January 2011. The remaining funds would be just under $1,000 after the purchase and installation of the lettering. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council consider approving the attached City Council Resolution 7777 Authorizing the Purchase and Installation of Signage for the Mounds View Community Center. The funds donated by Bethlehem Baptist Church on January 28, 2011 would be used to make this purchase from JDI Signs and Graphics in the amount of $1,860 plus permit fees.
