Page 4 <br /> • January 13, 1997 <br /> Summary: <br /> Fire sprinklers work and have proven time and time again to be the absolute solution to fire <br /> prevention and suppression. An activation at Bauer Welding earlier this year resulted in a loss <br /> under$500 compared to historical losses in the hundreds of thousands and millions. <br /> The cost of sprinklering is always offset by insurance premium savings and depending upon the <br /> occupancy class and accompanying hazard, occurs in as little as three years and can go up to <br /> twenty years. <br /> This "cost" of fire protection is rightly born by the occupant rather than the taxpaying citizen <br /> base who would otherwise need to fund more and larger equipment and manpower needs. <br /> Commercial and industrial fires, in my opinion, are the leading need in career fire departments. <br /> Adoption of the sprinkler code in all three of the cities we protect has allowed the Fire <br /> Department to provide volunteer protection to a combined population of 62,000 where numerous <br /> other cities with less population and some or all career people. <br /> In the case of churches and schools the problem is more prolific as those occupancies tend to <br /> require and use more public resources despite being exempt from the property tax roles. <br /> • <br />
