Faxed 7/10/95
(This letter has been retyped because the original in the file was faxed and was very difficult to read from
• having been copied so many times. There are phrases which we had to omit because they were
indecipherable, but the basic content of the letter is intact.)
Dear Mounds View City Council,
Yes,the City of Mounds View needs the pedestrian bridge across Highway 10 at Long Lake Road.
We are residents of Shoreview,we live on the other side of 35W,we are always riding bikes or rollerblading
in Mounds View to different business along Highway 10. I never allow my Children to cross Highway 10,
they are 15 & 13 years of age unless they are with me. I hate crossing on bikes, walking or rollerblading,
makes me nervous even though we always cross at the lights. They have to stay on the east side of Highway
10. Even at the cross lights the left turners don't always watch for pedestrians,I've been cut off by cars
turning when I am with the children on our bikes. It's just not safe crossing Highway 10. The cars are
traveling at too high a speed,I've seen cars pushing the speed to make a late yellow light and often end up
going on a red.
My daughter and I came upon an accident of a boy on a bike that was hit by a car further north on 10. You
wonder if we had safer crossings if that accident could have.been avoided.
My son goes to Irondale and my daughter goes to Edgewood,I just cringe when they ask if they can walk
home because they have to cross Highway 10. They have to call me at work as soon as they get home so I
know they crossed Highway 10 okay. They can only walk if there is a group of children walking so they are
more visible to traffic,one/two children are not as visible as a group.
I will not let my daughter cross Highway 10 to go to the Library by herself. I usually drive her there or bike
• with here in the evenings, and the library is not always open in the evenings so we end up going to the Anoka
Library instead. If we had a crossing bridge my daughter could go to the Moundsduringthe
day. View Library
Several months ago we had decided to move,we were looking in the Mounds View area on the west side of
Highway 10. We found several houses we considered but both of my children did not want to move there
because they would have to cross Highway 10 to visit most of their friends who live around our neighborhood
now and also go to their favorite eating places. We decided we did not want our children crossing such a
dangerous highway and decided to stay in Shoreview and add an addition on our home instead.
I also want to thank all those involved in the pathway linking Shoreview and Mounds View. I was overjoyed
when they completed that path. We use it all the time. They are able to ride to the business/fast food places
and their friends by using the path. My son works at Hardees and rides his bike or rollerblades back and
forth, its a great comfort knowing he can do this without being on a busy County Road I-I think this
pedestrian bridge would complete this wonderful idea of linking Communities together. Both of my children
were able to walk/bike to Pinewood School in safety on those paths, the only problem now of course is they
go to Edgewood&Irondale and when they want to ride their bikes the path will only lead them safely to
Highway 10.
Please consider the building of this pedestrian bridge,we all can benefit from it and the future of our
Communities depend on a safe way our citizens can cross Highway 10.
Thank you,
Shirley Klein
1748 Lois Drive
0 Shoreview,MN 55126
784-9162
