There is a grant called the Outdoor
Recreation Grant which offers 50 percent of the cost of park acquisition and development
projects. I am in the process of preparing a grant for the purchase of the land and development,
which would be phased in a three year timespan. Park development ideas include a small multi-
purpose ballfleld for softball/t-ball, soccer and flag football activities. In addition, a large multi-
age playground structure which is accessible and swing set would be included in the project. A
paved parking lot, (40 car stalls) would accommodate the park activities. This paved parking lot
would also serve as a hard court play area with small basketball court, four square and areas for
hopscotch and other chalk games. A small park building would be included to accommodate
neighborhood activities and possibly programs such as summer playgrounds, afterschool activities,
scout meetings, etc. Park amenities would include a landscaped park sign, signs for rules and
regulations, benches, picnic table, grill and trash receptacles. A drinking fountain would also be
installed.
The enclosed map provides an idea of one possible park layout. The grant would include
grading the area and site preparation.
Because this section of the community lacks accessible park facilities, it has been the intention of
the Parks and Recreation Commission to pursue the development of a park site in this general
location. Park areas offer a focal point for the neighborhood and provides a place for children
to play. This park would be classified as a neighborhood park because of its small size and
therefore tends to have a priority of serving the children of the immediate neighborhood.
The grant proposal will be approximately $200,000 over a three year timespan -- with a 50
percent match -- which brings the city's total share to $100,000 or $50,000 in 1995, $25,000 in
1996 and $25,000 in 1997.
Again, a grant is being submitted for the acquisition and development of a park. It is always
hopeful, but never certain that the grant will be awarded. Please attend the public hearing
regarding this project which will be held on Monday,July 25, 1994 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
Your ideas and feedback will be greatly appreciated.
