CITY Agenda Section: 11.B
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION Report Number: 95-1429C
IVSTAFF REPORT Report Date: s-15-95
Council Action:
❑ Special Order of Business
CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE August 21, 1995 CIPublic Hearings
Consent Agenda
17 Council Business
Item Description:
Consideration of Slurry Seal Bid
Administrator's Review/Recommendation:
- No comments to supplement this report /#471-
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY;
Staff advertised for the Slurry Sealing of selected streets for this years
Pavement Management Program. Only one bid was received. This is the same
contractor that was awarded the bid last year. Council might recall that
this procedure was accepted last year, after staff witnessed a
demonstration of the procedure in Mendota Heights . As a result of the
excellent recommendation from Mendota Heights, Fridley and Mounds View
decided to switch to this procedure for surface treatment of sealing
roadways .
Staff has found this treatment to be very durable, and it has eliminated
numerous complaints from residents concerning loose rock, both on the
street and in the lawns in the spring. A couple of other concerns were the
smell and the rough aggregate surface which caused severe abrasions when
children fell on the road. All of these concerns combined with the fact
that this is an extremely competent contractor delivering a superior
product, staff is very comfortable recommending that the City adopt slurry
sealing as the City' s surface treatment . The bid for 1995 is as follows:
Struck and Irwin Paving
Streets 30, 069 square yards $28, 565 . 55
PW Parking Lot 4 , 812 square yards 4 , 571.40
Total $33, 136 . 95
' / -- /7-7
, G
-,--77:: '
Michael Ulrich, Director of Public Works
RECOMMENDATION;
Staff recommends award for the Slurry Sealing bid to Struck and Irwin Paving for
$33,136.95, to be funded from account no. 100-4470-705, and authorize the Public Works
Director to sign all change orders up to 15% of the bid.
