I will be out of the office on Thursday and Friday morning attending the 2nd LMC
Regional meeting in glorious downtown Henning. I bet nobody but Sue knows where
that is. I will be checking in with Michele throughout the day for messages and she
will have the number where I can be reached.
I am attending some of the LMC Regional meetings in lieu of attending my National
City Manager Association's annual conference which was held last month in Denver.
Samantha
Highway 10 Property:
I spoke to the Realtor representing the new owners of 7800 Eastwood regarding the
City's interest in purchasing the property. They purchased the home for $62,400 and
have offered to sell it to the City for the recorded assessed value on the County
Books of $77,400. I will be offering a price that would allow the new owners to
recoup their cost plus a reasonable compensation but I feel that the offered price is
way too high. I will continue to negotiate and keep you posted.
Meeting with Mark Malone:
Samantha and I had lunch with Mark Malone this week. He is going to be taking his
time to find a new job and maybe even a new career. He thanks the City for their
kindness and will miss working with all of us but stressed the quality of Western Bank
as the right bank for the City. We discussed the Business Association and plan on
calling a meeting of any remaining members to discuss its future. Samantha and I
will be meeting with Cindy Carlson on Monday to discuss Western Bank's
participation in future events and commissions with the City. We feel it is imperative
that Western Bank continue to participate in the Festival and have a presence on the
Economic Development Commission. Mark was flattered that we invited him to
continue his term on the EDC but feels it is inappropriate as he has no business or
resident stake in the community.
Cathy
I attended a meeting at the League of Minnesota Cities regarding Indian sovereignty
issues. The main point discussed, was how in recent years American Indians have
been purchasing private land and in some instances, placing the land in trust status.
When in trust status (a federal government designation) the land is exempt from
paying property taxes even though local government services proceed to be served
to those owning the land. In many cases, this places a significant financial burden on
local governments who are dependent on property taxes and thus, erodes the
property tax base.
