At that
this quote met with Council approval . The following is a copy of the staff
report for Council' s review.
This summer lightning struck the antenna to the Public Works communication
radio. At that time Comm Center, the City' s radio vendor provided a loaner
unit for us to use while damages were being assessed to our base station.
The remainder of the summer and fall were extremely busy for both parties .
As a result of hectic schedules, the issue of repairing or replacing the
radio was not a high priority.
Comm Center inspected the City' s radio, and determined that the damage
sustained was too extreme to repair. Last week Comm Center returned to seek 1
the City' s position on replacing the radio. Staff has been dealing with
another radio vendor, Capitol Communications, since the purchase of the new
squad car radios . Staff invited their experts to assess the damaged base,
and provide recommendations for a new base, if necessary, and any type of
lightning protection available. Their opinion of the damage to our radio
was confirmed.
Capitol Communications has provided the City with a quote to replace the
base station. While this radio is more expensive than the previous model,
it is built with a modular component design and offers far better surge and
lightning protection. Staff was very impress with Capitols recommendations
and knowledge regarding radio performance. In researching the City' s radio
license, it was noted that Mounds View only has a license for 9 mobile
units and 5 portable radios . Currently we have 25 mobile units and 20
portable radios, including Police.
Capitol Communications will try and upgrade the City' s license in the
process of purchasing a new base station. The recommendation of staff to
change communication vendors is based on several reference checks and
personal contact when purchasing the new radios for the squad car. Capitol
Communications also was awarded the State Contract for radios . The
following is thepurchase price for the new base station, related
protection and service to vehicles :
RECOMMENDATION; New base radio
$6, 202 . 29
Lightning Prot . 743 . 79
Vehicle Service 500 . 00
TOTAL $7, 446 . 00 (over)
