COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS
About two years ago, the City hired a part-time Custodian to replace the
service that had cleaned City Hall for a number of years. This was done
for two reasons. First, it was more cost effective to have someone clean
the building on a part-time basis than to contract this service out.
Secondly, the City receives a higher quality of service and more skills and
abilities from a part-time employee.
As is standard City practice, this comparison was again made which shows
that the City saves almost $4000 per year by hiring a part-time custodian.
The cost for the service is $14 per hour and the number of hours worked per
week is 15 or 780 hours per year. This is $10,920 per year.
If a part-time custodian earns $8 per hour for 780 hours ($6240) and
include required benefits such as Social Security and PERA $6240 x . 1213
= $756. 91 and workers compensation $6240 x . 01655 = $103 . 30, the total cost
is $6999 . 91.
