REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION Agenda Section: 18'
!VS Report Number: 94-1067WS
STAFF REPORT February 7, 1994 Report Date: 2-3-94
AGENDA SESSION DATE
DISPOSITION
Item Description: Year End Report — Public Works
Administrator's Review/Recommendation:
- No comments to supplement this report ,-
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY;
The year of 1993 has been busy for the Public Works Department. Two major construction projects,
Long Lake Road Reconstruction and Greenfield Ponds Development, slowed and in some cases,
postponed a few of Staff's maintenance goals. Although an abnormally wet summer made scheduling
projects and maintenance challenging, Staff feels they had a very productive year. The following is
a brief summary of major accomplishments by each division.
WATER DIVISION
Due to another extremely wet year, water usage has decreased again for the third year in a row.
While revenues are expected to be lower than projected, Staff felt somewhat lucky that the City's
water demand had decreased throughout the summer season. With two out of three water treatment
plants inoperable due to reconstruction, the new treatment plant ran near capacity and supplied the
system with adequate flows. Total gallons pumped for the year were 425,134,000.
The water division worked closely with Ramsey County on the Long Lake Road reconstruction
project. Duties included locations of water and sewer services (relocated 3 times), testing of new
water main and hydrant installations, weekly construction meetings and the installation of a 12 inch
main crossing at Long Lake Road and State Highway 10. Staff assisted with the water connection
project to the Driver's Exam Station in Arden Hills. A total of 6 water main breaks were repaired and
the biannual water main flushing was completed.
SEWER DIVISION
A couple of major achievements of Staff within this division, were the completion of the Greenfield
Ponds utility installation and replacement, and the connection of Skyline Motel to the municipal
sanitary sewer system. Staff cleaned 61,160 feet of sanitary sewer main line, cleaned 2,800 feet of
storm sewer pipe, cut roots in 2,300 feet of sanitary sewer and televised 11,800 feet of sanitary.
Through these inspections, two sanitary sewer breaks were discovered. One repair was made with an
internal sleeve and the other had to be excavated. Plans were reviewed with the Twin City
Ammunition Plant for possible hook-up to the municipal sewer system. The City's 2 lift stations,
Groveland and Bronson, pumped 37,588,000 gallons of waste water.
Michael Ulrich, Public Works Supervisor
