On
April 23rd, Officer Terry Broos retired after serving 27 years for the city of Mounds View. On
May 22nd, Officer Steve Geringer, also retired after 20 years with the city, as well as
additional years of service with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department. We also saw the
retirement of Chief Mike Sommer on October 30th after nearly 7 years with Mounds View and
many years of previous service with the Blaine Police Department and Anoka County
Sheriff’s Department. Chief Sommer had a total of 29 years of law enforcement service.

Together these three officers had over 80 years of experience that will be greatly missed!

The department hired our first female officer, Kirsten Lafean, in June, bringing a much
needed female perspective to the department. Officer Lafean is a welcomed addition to the
patrol unit!

An on-going hiring process will continue until the existing vacancies are filled.

A vacancy has also been created with the resignation of the Public Service Officer (PSO).
PSO Tyler Martin submitted his resignation to take a full time police officer position with
another municipality.

Best wishes are extended to all our police employees who have provided years of dedicated
service.

DNR Gun Safety Classes

Mounds View Police Officers taught the DNR gun safety course to a
class of local youth in the fall. Students participating must be a
minimum of 11 years of age. A total of 19 students attended this most
recent course. The Minnesota DNR firearm safety class consists of 17
hours of classroom and field experience in the safe handling of firearms
and hunter responsibility. The field experience allows students to
demonstrate accepted principles of safety in hunting and the handling
of firearms that they learned in the classroom. It includes live fire on a rifle range. Our
students fired .22 rifles at a local indoor gun range. Upon successful completion of the
course, students receive a hunter safety certificate. This certificate allows the student to
purchase a hunting license in Minnesota and other states where certification is required. This
educational opportunity in firearms provided by our officers allows positive interaction to
occur between the officers and the young members of our community. It provides a setting for
young students to be able to view our officers from a new perspective.
