www.ci.mounds-view.mn.us
10
The Mounds View PD donated a number of unclaimed bicycles to the Edgewood Middle
School STAND kids. These kids plan on taking the bikes, fixing them up, repainting them,
and giving them away to people who do not have any transportation.

The deans and principal requested help supporting at-risk students this year by having SRO
Knitter meet with students on a regular basis that have been designated as at-risk for
delinquency. Through counseling at-risk students it has helped develop positive relationships
prior to any negative law enforcement involvement in their lives. In addition to meeting with
these students, SRO Knitter has counseled numerous other students about issues such as
drugs, alcohol, gangs, harassment, fights, bus safety, and running away from home. Parents
and citizens have called or visited the SRO office to seek counseling about their children
using illegal substances, their children misbehaving at home, and general law enforcement
concerns in the community. Students and parents have also provided tips related to crimes
committed in the community which are forwarded on to investigators and patrol officers.

During daily performance of duties, SRO Knitter has helped maintain school security and bus
safety. On several occasions, the SRO offered services to deescalate students in crisis. The
school’s security camera system has been utilized to recover missing and stolen property,
and to locate incidents of bullying or harassment in the hallways. SRO Knitter attended each
of the school dances as well as the school’s first annual Unity Event for which supervision of
students was provided. SRO Knitter participated in the required school drills such as the lock
down drills, fire drills, and severe weather drills. SRO Knitter has also served on several
Edgewood committees such as the SAIL (special education) Team, the Building Operations
Committee, and the Anti-bullying/Positive Student Behavior Committee

Crime Prevention/DARE

2009 presented many challenges and opportunities for the Crime Prevention Unit.

Officer Keckeisen hosted a very successful DARE program for over 100 5th graders from
Pinewood Elementary School. Officer Keckeisen also met with the 5th grade teachers from
Pinewood Elementary School to set and finalize the DARE curriculum for the 2009 / 2010
school year.

To provide added safety for school aged children Officer Keckeisen, along with the Patrol
Division provided extra police presence at the cross walks of Edgewood, Sunnyside, and
Pinewood schools before and after school.

Officer Keckeisen conducted two tobacco and alcohol compliance checks this year. During
the first alcohol compliance check in the spring, two businesses failed and were each
charged with gross misdemeanors. All businesses passed during the winter rounds of
checks. One business failed the winter tobacco check.
