Item No: 8C Meeting Date: February 22, 2010 Type of Business: Consent Administrator Review : ____ City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Thomas Kinney, Deputy Police Chief Item Title/Subject: Resolution 7579 Approving Purchase of Five 800 MHz Radios in Accordance with Federal UASI Grant Funds Awarded to Ramsey County Emergency Management. Introduction: Ramsey County Emergency Management has been awarded federal Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant funds for equipment needs throughout the county. Ramsey County has extended offers to the local jurisdictions to apply use of these funds for the acquisition of 800 MHz radios for both law enforcement and particularly, public works department needs. Conditions of the grant dictate that the cities are fully reimbursed after the initial purchase. 800 MHz radios are the current standard in radio communication. Without this capability, interoperable communication between law enforcement and other emergency responders is not possible. Discussion: Mounds View does not currently have 800 MHz radios to equip the Public Works Department. Ramsey County has made available funds in the amount of $6737.30 for the purchase of five Motorola XTS 1500 radios with accompanying software, batteries, chargers and speaker microphones. To facilitate this acquisition that was not previously budgeted, an increase to the police grant revenue fund 222-3318 of $6737.30 and an increase to the grant expenditure budget 222-7030 for the same amount is necessary. These radios will subsequently be issued to the Mounds View Public Works Department so communication in the field between public works and other emergency responders will be possible.
