2008 Mounds View Comprehensive Plan
________________________________________________________________________

Chapter 6: Transportation
Traffic Crash Data

Most of the traffic crashes in Mounds View occur along the following roadway corridors:
• County Highway 10
• US Highway 10
• County Road I
• Silver Lake Road
• Long Lake Road

The City does not expect this pattern to change, as these are the roads with the higher volumes of
traffic. The majority of crashes occur at the intersections of roadways. The intersections that have the
highest frequency of crashes are all on County Highway 10:
Number of Crashes 2
Intersection (2004-2006)
County Highway 10 and County Road H 36
County Highway 10 and Woodale Drive 4
County Highway 10 and County Road H2 11
County Highway 10 and Edgewood Dr 17
County Highway 10 and Long Lake Road 12
County Highway 10 and County Road I 21
County Highway 10 and Silver Lake Road 13
County Highway 10 and Groveland Road 9

All of these intersections are controlled with traffic signals, with the exception of County Highway 10
and Groveland Road. Another area of high accident frequency occurs at the junction of US Highway
10 and Interstate 35W. The convergence of the southbound exit ramp from 35W and County
Highway 10 is also an area of high accident frequency. Almost half of the reported accidents on
County Road 10 south of County Road H to the southern boundary of the city can be accounted to that
junction point.

All intersections and accident areas are of a concern to the City in terms of public safety of both
motorists and pedestrians. Pinewood Elementary School is at the corner of County Road I and Quincy
Street (reported 9 crashes in 5 years). This intersection has a higher than average traffic flow in all
directions. As such, the City, County and school district should continue to take special precautions
to reduce accidents and to protect the safety of children in this area.

While most reported accidents involve some type of vehicle-to-vehicle collision, typically 15-20
percent involves only one vehicle. These crashes involve the striking of a fixed object, such as a sign
post or traffic signal, roll-overs, and accidents involving a deer, bicycle or pedestrians.

2 Crash data compiled from MnDOT’s Crash Mapping and Analysis Tool (MnCMAT)
6-27
