Item No: 8E <br />Meeting Date: April 13, 2009 <br />Type of Business: Consent <br />Administrator Review: ____ <br /> <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: James Ericson, Clerk - Administrator <br />Item Title/Subject: Resolution 7429 Accepting a Donation from Bethlehem <br />Baptist Church <br /> <br />Background <br /> <br />Bethlehem Baptist Church purchased the building located at 5151 Program Avenue in <br />2004 and received City zoning approval to renovate the former office / warehouse <br />space for church usage. At this same time, the Church expressed its desire to sponsor <br />and support worthy community endeavors and thus created the Mounds View Service <br />Project Fund pledging annual donations totaling $25,000. According to the Church, <br />they envisioned the fund to be used to help meet certain community needs jointly <br />identified by the city and the Church that would be “in harmony” with their mission and <br />values. Previous donations have funded Mounds View park improvements, the <br />YMCA’s Y Partners program, the Mounds View Festival in the Park, the Mounds View <br />School District’s SAIL and STAND programs, the DARE program, Irondale High School <br />athletics and CEAP—the Community Emergency Assistance Program—among others. <br /> <br />Discussion <br /> <br />Representatives from the City, the Community Center and the Park & Rec Commission <br />met with representatives from Bethlehem Baptist Church facility on January 30, 2009 to <br />discuss potential funding opportunities for the first half 2009 service project fund <br />donation which totaled $13,801. A number of programs and improvements were <br />highlighted for Bethlehem’s consideration. Subsequent to the meeting, staff put <br />together various cost estimates associated with the projects and programs discussed, <br />forwarding this information to the Church on March 11, 2009. The Church responded <br />with a letter dated April 1, 2009, recommending the following disbursement schedule: <br /> <br /> 1. Trailway project (benches, lighting, landscaping) $2,000 <br /> 2. Backstop & Fence at Silverview Park $1,800 <br /> 3. Landscaping around the Co. Rd 10 gateway signs $1,000 <br /> 4. YMCA’s Y-Partners program $1,000 <br /> 5. YMCA’s Club Mid program $7,000 <br /> 6. MVCC Audio / Video needs $1,001 <br /> <br />In addition, Bethlehem provided a donation in the amount of $2,760 to be deposited into <br />the EDA account to be used for activities that continue to support the economic climate <br />of the City of Mounds View. <br />
