Item No: 11B3
Meeting Date: April 13, 2009
Type of Business: Reports
Administrator Review : ___
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: James Ericson, Clerk - Administrator
Item Title/Subject: Administrator Reports

1. YMCA Advisory Committee Meeting

The committee got together Monday, April 6, to review operations, programs, facility
maintenance and other issues. Public Works Director Nick DeBar joined us so that he could
meet the MVCC – YMCA staff such as Pat Prindle, Kirk Erickson and Matt Baumann. Also
attending were Pat Riemersma, Steve Dazenski and Council member Hull. Matt Baumann
provided an update on events in the banquet center, almost every Saturday for the rest of
the year is booked and they are working on Fridays and Sundays. We will be replacing the
four older non-commercial ceiling fans in the banquet center with six commercial fans and
we are researching furniture options to replace the chairs in the banquet center and the
upholstered furniture in the lobby, all of which is in poor condition. Pat P. reports that
registrations for the summer parks programs are lagging behind last year’s rate, probably
due to the hefty fee increase this year. We are learning that despite the increase, the MVCC
summer parks programs are still priced better than other options. There will be a Pitch, Hit
and Run event at Silverview on May 16th. Kirk reports that they have been coordinating
some programs with the Mounds View Library. The MVCC will be holding a 5k fun run again
this summer in conjunction with the Festival. Medtronic will be providing a number of
volunteers. Many new programs, some geared toward our senior residents, are being added.
There have been some complaints about the work being done by the people contracted to
clean the MVCC so we will monitor that and follow up as needed. Steve and Matt discussed
painting options for the walls around the banquet center, which seem to always be in need of
touch-ups. The next Advisory Committee meeting date is May 4, 2009.

2. Public Works Director

Nick Debar will have completed his second week of work by the time you read this report.
While being sensitive to not overwhelming him with too much information, we have kept him
fairly busy with in an effort to get him up to speed on the various projects in the works. Joe
Rhein has been very helpful during this time, however as Nick becomes more familiar with
the projects at hand, Joe’s role will gradually diminish. The key, naturally, is to ensure as
smooth a transition as possible. Nick has been very eager to learn the ropes, get to know
his crew, assess individuals’ function and become more familiar with the operations. Nick
attended the pre-construction meeting for the 2009-2010 street and utility improvement
project on and reports that everything is on track with the exception of Xcel, who had been
planning on replacing the natural gas distribution lines in the project area. Apparently Xcel
will not be starting right away which could adversely impact the timing of the rest of the
project. Nick will work with Bonestroo to ensure the project moves forward on schedule.
