Administrator Report
April 13, 2009
Page 3

7. Public Works Seasonals

The City Council authorized the hire of eight seasonals for public works at their meeting on
February 23, 2009. After the notice was posted in the newspaper, 80 applications were
received, seven of which were submitted by seasonal workers from last year. Interviews
were conducted this week and the seasonals should be starting between mid-May and the
the end of May. Bill Hanggi has also accepted another tour of duty as a seasonal worker for
the City, bringing with him decades of experience.

8. I-35W Corridor Coalition

I have not yet paid the 2009 membership statement for the I-35W Corridor Coalition and
given the City’s budgetary position, I would like some direction from the Council as to its
desire to continue our involvement with the organization. The Coalition originated as a sub-
group to the North Metro Mayors Association (an organization with which we remain
involved) and in speaking with Joseph Strauss, it could be the case as its membership
dwindles, that the coalition could be brought back under the umbrella of NMMA. In my
opinion, while there is a value in having such an organization work with the state and federal
government in an effort to improve the function and operation of I-35W north of Minneapolis,
the City’s present budgetary situation is cause alone to re-examine our involvement. By
dropping out of the coalition, the City would save $6,000. If the Council would like, I can
invite Joseph Strauss to attend an upcoming Council meeting to give you an overview of the
Coalition and its goals before you make such a decision. I have alerted Mr. Strauss of this
possibility and he asks that the Council not make a decision until after such a meeting
occurs.

9. Police Officer Hire Process
As the Council is aware, the police department is going through a hiring process as outlined
by the Police Civil Service Commission (PCSC). One hundred and twenty-two applications
were received for the one opening, and ninety-one applicants took the written test. Fourteen
oral interviews have been completed and the physical agility test will occur on April 18th.
After all of the testing and background checks have been completed, the Council will be
presented the top three candidates (the eligibility list) as reviewed and approved by the
PCSC. This will likely occur in May.

10. New Brighton Area Historical Society
As the Mayor reported last week, the New Brighton Area Historical Society will be featuring
Mounds View’s 50th anniversary history video at their annual meeting on April 23, 2009, at
the New Brighton Family Service Center. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm with the video to
begin at 7:00 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

________________________
James Ericson
Clerk - Administrator
