realize the 5% ceiling are policy decisions which require Council direction.
Detailed information on the first draft will be provided in next week's Council packet.
Samantha
Economic Development Association Summer Conference:
Last week I attended the Economic Development Association Summer Conference at
Maddens. The conference was entitled "Telecommunications Opportunities for
Economic Development". I learned all I needed to know about the ever changing
world of telecommunications technology. In addition, I learned about some new on-
line resources for information on industries, companies and programs available in
Minnesota. Most importantly I made excellent contacts with representatives of other
cities in Minnesota and State officials. It was a fun time but would have been much
more enjoyable if it didn't rain the entire time and the temperature was a little warmer.
Oh well, maybe next year!
Retention:
The first batch of surveys to local businesses is scheduled to be sent at the end of
June with meetings scheduled in early July. Currently, we have over 160 businesses
listed in Mounds View. The survey will also enable the city to update their business
listing. I'm very excited to have this program begin and am looking forward to
meeting with as many businesses as possible.
Samantha and I will be attending the North Metro Business Retention and
Development Commission meeting on Friday. The board will formally accept Mounds
View into the Commission at this meeting and I anticipate there will be discussions
regarding the funds appropriated from the legislature.
Outreach:
I have been assigned to a League of Minnesota Cities Policy Committee entitled
"Improving Local Economies Committee". The committee will meet in July and
September and will review the reports from six task forces that will address Growth
Management, Economic Development and Redevelopment, Telecommunications and
Information Systems, Housing, Transportation, and Workers Compensation as an
economic development disincentive. The committee will take the recommendations
from these task forces and develop and propose policy to the League membership to
be enacted at the federal and state level. LMC has also suggested that each member
of the committee participate on one of the task forces. I have chosen to participate in
the Economic Development and Redevelopment Task Force. My experience
addressing these same issues in San Diego will provide valuable insight to the task
force and committee.
