REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATIONIIIAgenda Section: 6
0UDS STAFF REPORT Report Number: 93-572WS
Mt August 2, 1993 Report Date: 7-29-93
AGENDA SESSION DATE
DISPOSITION
Item Description: Discussion Regarding Resident Request for Treating Growth in Silver View Park
Pond
Administrator's Review/Recommendation:
- No comments to supplement this report
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY;
Two requests have been made to me regarding treating Silver View
Park pond for weed growth. If you will recall, two years ago the
pond was treated. Permits were received from the DNR for
chemical treatment of certain areas of the pond. The permit did
not include lily pads, but instead was approved for the green
fuzzy algae that sits on top of the water. In essence, what the
chemicals do is kill the growth. The growth then sinks to the
bottom of the pond. The result is that the water looks clear
once again. The algae does present an odor, looks wretched and
does impede use by canoes.
The requests were received by both Laurie and Edd Trettel and
Clifford Ash, representative of the Silver Lake Woods Homeowners
Association.
The cost of the treatment two years ago was $2, 000 plus
permitting fees. This item was one of the cuts made in 1992 and
was not requested for the 1993 budget. At the time of the 1992
cuts it was expressed by the Council that the homeowners living
around the pond could perhaps fund the cost of the treatment
since it most directly affects them.
Staff is requesting direction from the Council regarding this
issue. It is my understanding that a letter or petition of names
is being prepared and that a formal request will be submitted to
the City Council for consideration of funding the pond treatment.
P ili2ke
rDirector of Parks, Recreation and Forestry
RECOMMENDATION;
