Work Session Report
Feb 1, 2016
Item #5

New ways to talk about your city; think about the nature of the city; gather community support.
New sources of funding; allies.
Find the heart of your city.
We need to be emotional (LOVE your city) bearers. Usually 40% are unattached, 36% are neutral, 24%
are attached. We need to connect with the 24% and get them to attract the other 76%.
We all relate to "fixing potholes", the normal things that need to be done in the city. We also need to
aspire for more art, creativity, beauty (BEAUTIFY HWY 10)
Building a Lovable City
Fun
Interesting
Convivial
Comfortable
Safe
Functional
Where in our city is the fun? (Splash pad)
Bike friendly city is a loveable city. (Bike racks in front businesses)
Walkable (We have the trails - connect to the library)
A dog friendly city - dog owners walk their dogs, this provides a sense of safety because they are out
walking thru the neighborhoods. It humanizes cities. (a small dog park?)
Youth friendly (teens) - saying no to them now makes them want to leave. All ages club (thru the
YMCA); SKATEBOARDING - still something they really care about. We are saying no to their culture.
Love Notes: what is loveable
small things we give to residents - they give back.
make your city comfortable - sitting places, resting areas
Public Art: Something to STOP and look at. (our new round about, the entrance of our city). Interactive
art.
Murals! (does our sign ordinance hinder this from happening?) One city did a paint by number mural
where it allowed residents to get dirty and participate in creating a piece of art.
Community gardens; once again growing in popularity. (maybe where the blue park use to be)
