Item No: 2
Meeting Date: August 3, 2015
Type of Business: Work Session
City Administrator Review: _____

City of Mounds View Staff Report

To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Desaree Crane, Assistant City Administrator
Item Title/Subject: Mounds View Volunteer Program Update

Introduction:
Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) is an alliance of individuals
and networks dedicated to providing support and resources to those who lead
volunteers. On September 8, 2014, the City was awarded a grant from MAVA, in the
amount of $2,000, to start the process in establishing a City Volunteer Program.

Discussion:
I wanted to update the City Council on what the City has done thus far in starting the
process of establishing a City Volunteer Program:

• Receptionist/Recycling Coordinator Mary Springer and I have attended a
number of training sessions sponsored by MAVA to learn about
establishing a volunteer program. In May, Mary Springer and I attended
the MAVA Conference. At this conference, there were workshops on
administration and management of a volunteer program.

• Mary Springer and I have been working with Cable Television Coordinator
Vanessa Van Alstine to brainstorm ideas on a Volunteer PSA, which
would be aired on the City’s cable channel, YouTube, website and
Facebook. I have attended each Mounds View Commission Meeting in
March and April to solicit volunteers as talent for this PSA. Staff is just
starting work on a script for this PSA.

• Mary and I have also been working with the cities of Roseville, Inver
Grove Heights and West St. Paul to solicit ideas on volunteer
opportunities. Our next step is establishing a volunteer program website
on the City’s website. Attached is draft of the Mounds View Volunteer
Program and Volunteer application. It is Staff’s intention to launch the
volunteer program on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, on the City’s website. In
addition, an article will be written in the next Mounds View Matters in
regard to this program.

Respectfully submitted,
_______________________
Desaree Crane
