Item No: 1
Meeting Date: August 4, 2014
Type of Business: Work Session
Administrator Review: ____

City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Desaree Crane, Assistant City Administrator
Item Title/Subject: Presentation by Minnesota Association for Volunteer
Administration (MAVA)

A couple of City Council Members attended a roundtable discussion at the League of
Minnesota Cities Conference on increasing volunteer engagement. The Minnesota
Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) conducted this roundtable discussion
to receive input from cities and organizations on crafting new strategies to engage
communities in volunteerism. Some of the highlights of this discussion included:

1. Grant Opportunity. MAVA has invited cities to consider applying for one of
the four small grants for enhancing a city’s volunteer program. Attached is
information for your reference. City staff has already submitted a letter of
intent to inform MAVA of the City’s intent to apply for the grant.

2. Discounts for MAVA training. MAVA invited cities to attend their Volunteer
Impact Leadership Series. This is a two day intensive course which trains
members of MAVA on the elements of leading volunteers. The training would
provide organizations with the information they need to initiate, improve, and
re-energize their volunteer programs. MAVA would like to offer 50% off of
the series. The next training session will be located in Rochester on
September 23 and 24.

3. Task Force: MAVA would be setting up a task force to guide cities and
organizations on volunteer engagement.

Mary Quirk, Executive Director of MAVA will be making a presentation to the City
Council on their program, to include membership and training costs. Attached is
information on MAVA, and an analysis study from the League of Minnesota Cities on
using volunteers for your reference.

Respectfully submitted,

________________________________
Desaree Crane
