Debra Hansen, who lives in a r ambler on Kumquat
Street N.W., checks a floor plan dr awing of the
r emodeling planned for the rambler on Xavis Street
N.W.
http://abc new s papers.com/2012/02/23/f if th-house-c oon-rapids -home-f or -generations -w as -s how c as ed-f or-the-public /Februray 28, 2012
Fifth house Coon Rapid s Home for G en erati o n s was
sh o wcased fo r th e p u b lic
by Peter B odley
Managing Editor
A steady stream of people walked through a vacant/foreclosed home i n C oon Rapids for three
hours S unday afternoon.
The purpose was a pre-constructi on open house to show off the plans that have been made for the
remodeling of the rambler at 11635 X avi s St. N.W., whi ch was built in 1960.
This is the fifth vacant/foreclosed home that the Coon Rapi ds Housing and Redevelopment
Authori ty (HRA) has purchased through the Home for Generati ons program si nce it was launched in
2009.
The purpose of the Home for Generations program has been to purchase vacant/foreclosed older
homes in the ci ty, remodel them and then sell them to recover the HRA’s purchase and remodeling
costs, not to turn a profit.
All four pri or homes that have been purchased and remodeled have been sold, including two last
year.
But more than that, the HRA, through the Home for Generations program, wants to give residents
livi ng i n older homes i n the ci ty ideas for remodeli ng thei r own homes.
And for that reason, the city has pre-constructi on, mid-construction and post-constructi on open
houses.
To do the remodeling projects, the HRA hi res a contractor through a requests for proposal (RFP)
process.
Darrell Olson, bui lder, remodeler and owner of Legacy Homes Inc., was chosen by the HRA to
handle the Xavis Street project.
A native of C oon Rapids and a graduate of C oon Rapi ds Hi gh School, who then attended Anoka-
Ramsey C ommuni ty C ollege, Olson started i n the bui ldi ng trades in 1988 and went i nto business for
himself wi th Legacy Homes in 1996, both bui ldi ng and remodeling homes.
Accordi ng to Olson, construction was to start this week wi th completi on i n 60 days.
