DEPARTMENTAL BUDGET NARRATIVE <br />FUND: General <br />DEPARTMENT: Forestry <br />DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVE: <br />To promote and protect a high quality urban environment in Mounds <br />View through an aggressive program of tree planting, maintenance <br />and disease / pest control. <br />ACTIVITIES: <br />The major activities of the Forestry Division are to inspect and <br />control tree diseases and pests, tree planting and landscaping of <br />City parks and public areas, maintaining trees and landscaping on <br />public land and performing tree and landscape extension -related <br />work with residents. <br />The joint powers agreement with the City of New Brighton will <br />provide for services of a Forester one day each week plus one <br />forestry worker one day each week. <br />DEPARTMENT GOALS: <br />1. Keep Dutch Elm disease losses to less than 2.5 percent of <br />remaining elm population. <br />2. Keep Oak Wilt losses to less than 100 trees through strict <br />inspection and public education. <br />3. Apply for grants for the funding of reforestation projects. <br />4. Maintain Tree City USA status in order to qualify for <br />grants. <br />DEPARTMENT EXPENDITURE COMMENTS: <br />Mounds View's Forestry Program consists of tree disease <br />inspection and control, tree planting and maintenance and public <br />education and involvement. Tree removal will take place on both <br />public and private property; the cost of the latter being <br />reimbursed to the City. Trimming of easement trees will take <br />place on a priority schedule basis. New and replacement trees <br />will be planted where plantings were vandalized or failed the <br />previous year until all grant monies are expended. <br />
